The Best of 20162017

APRIL 2016 A WEEKEND with the UK Explorers’,taking time out to meet a new group.

JULY 2016 LET ENGLAND SHAKE

The Eden Project  I would like to dedicate this post to my friend from Cornwall. Keith Richards who passed away unexpectedly w/end of July 28th 2017. The last time I saw him was at this gig.

Let England Shake  PJ HARVEY

I met Keith in London in the early 80’s both of us were on some Government Back to Work Scheme; He was learning accountancy and I was learning Industrial sewing; neither of us continued in these trades, but we became friends as we had a shared interest in bands like The Fall and The Damned!  He had a good sense of humour & an appreciation of the ‘Dark Side’, When he moved back to Cornwall he kindly put me up on my many visits. He gave me the opportunity to really get to know Cornwall.

I loved walking around Landsend, Sennen Cove and Penzance area. His brother-in-law managed the stunning Minack Theatre. https://www.minack.com

Keith was a real fun guy unfortunately Chron’s disease finally got him. RIP Keith.

FEBRUARY 2017

I managed to persuade a South Bank member ( who I had made friends with some years ago ) get up early on a Saturday morning and head to Lewes for a walk to Glynde it was snowing & freezing.( I wonder why I haven’t heard from her since!)

MARCH 2017

Spent a bit of time around Lewes /Berwick/ Glynde area trying to get to know it better.  I am now loaded with real maps and online maps and better prepared than ever, the only thing lacking is time.

April 2017

Taking a breather. Back in my home town again.. Great pics. A brief reunion with very old friend in Newcastle. We will meet again New Year’s Eve.

Then a lot of walking along coast of South Shields and in Newcastle.

May 2017

As I have done for the last 4 years My old familiar walk along the Seven Sisters from Seaford I have been leading every year. I do  love this walk and will continue to do this or a variation of this every year but I want to add a couple of more routes to my repertoire. I will get down to the Kent/Sussex Coast in the Autumn before the year is through. I need to try the Rye- Hastings route.

WHERE NOW?

I’m going to NYC in September and haven’t visited there since 1986, at that time I stayed in Harlem for a month, the hostel cost me $3 a night, it was the best time ever I loved it.

This time I’m sharing the experience & staying at The Jane near the ‘meatpacking’ industry and I’m prepared to have my eyes opened again. I will be doing a lot of walking.

NYC should be a good jumping off point in terms of looking at the bigger picture and making long sought after changes.

Until then

keep on keeping on.

Let England Shake

June

A month of Ups & Downs

Looking In Looking Out

With some free time planned off from work, it was a bit of trial and error as to how to plan a little West Coast UK Trip on the 24/6/2016.

Having bought advanced tickets for the P J Harvey Gig at the Eden Project, and a brother living in Torquay, we were trying to get a few days down the coast in before the gig. We managed to get to Taunton after about 7 hours from London, heading towards Somerset on the weekend of Glastonbury in  torrential rain, and long queues made for a tedious journey. Added were the thoughts of what might happen now ‘Britain had spoke ‘and voted to get OUT of Europe. I could not believe it. I was not feeling very optimistic.

Stopping at Taunton for a night with enough time for a meal and a couple of drinks,we enjoyed a little walkabout in town which was very quiet. There was a sweet little park and the town was quite smart but not a lot happening.!

The next day heading for Exeter for some shopping & a browse round some of the side streets, vintage shop. We stopped for a brilliant ploughman’s lunch at a cafe ( will blog that later) on the green facing the cathedral, then down to Torquay for some evening sun and a couple of drinks.

Cornwall

After a night at Torquay, the next day the rain started again so that put a dampener on our plans to camp near Sennen Cove. Somewhat despondent we stopped at a dismal pub on the road to nowhere to be presented with the worst sandwich in the world. I actually took it back. Something I have never done before. But  when it comes to food, I wasn’t having it! If Pret A Manger can produce really good quality sandwiches daily so can a pub.

Penzance

I have a soft spot for Penzance.  It being situated near Lands End, a lively town with  easy access to some lovely beaches and fishing ports nearby. We were lucky to get a B & B at the last-minute. The people down there are extremely friendly and helpful,

After a night in Penzance we made our way to Sennen for a quick dip in the sea, which was  freezing. Then headed up to the Eden Project for a night of  camping for the gig. I haven’t camped in about 15 years, so it was somewhat apprehensive.

PJ HARVEY

EDEN PROJECT ST AUSTELL CORNWELL

Despite the ups and downs of the last few days I wasn’t disappointed with the gig.

The cocktails were obviously stronger than I realised, I was convinced my superb photography skills would produce some stunning shots of PJ Harvey. Alas all I got was the backs of people’s heads and a black void with a few shapes..Hope these pics will do you.

PJ Harvey gig at Glastonbury is available on BBC I PLAYER for another few weeks.

EDEN

EDEN

PJ  HARVEY and her band have moved to another level, this isn’t really the place to write a music review but the set they played was really well choreographed and delivered a range of songs from two recent albums.  It was  extremely moving. She has matured into a slick and cool performer. I was entranced.

Have a listen to the apt named Let England shake track from one of her albums.

There’s a really well written review of the gig worth reading follow this link.

It’s been emotional lately and it’s a must to get out of London as much as possible and in particular to get out and walk. I have two or three planned for July and somehow finding time to develop my other website Juliecanblog . I haven’t got a time schedule or deadline on this but possibly by the end of this year.

PS If you like my blog please sign up and you can get it delivered to your Email inbox. Also if you are interested in joining any walks with a group please check out my Up and Coming Walks page.
