Travel

Travel refines the mind- Oscar Wilde

The quote Travel refines the mind was written on a wall in the train station waiting room at Zell am See, in Austria. Zell am See is about an hour away from Salzburg.

I’m not so sure that travel refines the mind, but I will go so far as to say it certainly expands the mind!

What am I doing here was the question!

Eating out

There wasn’t a massive range of  plant based food in the cafes and restaurants. Although saying that, most of them did at least one interesting dish, and were quite innovative with it.

we ate out one evening in Kraft werk’ a beautiful upstairs restaurant and wine bar. They cooked something special which involved a lot of mushrooms.

LAKE ZELL

One of the most beautiful sights was on Lake Zell in a Misty morning, seeing dozens of swans gliding elegantly . I couldn’t quite capture that in a snapshot,

SWAN LAKE

MIST -EARLY SUN- MOUNTAIN LAKE.- the only day we saw sun.

LAKE ZELL IN THE MORNING MIST.

TIS ART.

We did go up into the mountains to admire the views but I wasnt’ keen on my friend trying to hike alongside the skiers and insisted we went back into town.

High up in the mountains where skiers love to ski.

Ketzbuhel

We took a train to Kitzbuhel one day, about an hour away and 30 euros, so not cheap, it wasn’t any warmer there but a change of scenery at least.

Trying to stay warm by walking about quickly! Most days are -6.

Beautiful churchyard with ancient gravestones.

Gothic style emblems .

picturesque building

We had a few hours to spare before our flight back to London. We walked about Salzburg and found a Vietnam place to have lunch. There’s not a lot more you can do in a couple of hours.

It’s still below 6 and I’m getting fed up! It’s really a place to ski or stay indoors.

I came back with more socks ( having  bought a few pairs on my last European break in Bruges) and a bottle opener.

I went on the trip with a friend who bought my plane ticket, she was recuperating from an operation, and I couldn’t persuade her to go somewhere warmer where it would be more relaxing.  She had a soft spot for this town, having lived there some years ago,

Meanwhile back In the Damp and dreary UK, I picked up another cough

It wasn’t the best day for a walk, but I joined up with a friend and The South Bank Ramblers for a Hampstead Heath walk. It rained all day.

I coughed all of the way from Pimlico to Brixton on the tube coming back. Not a good look. ( I spent a few days indoors after this.) I’m fine now.

Kiwi Plant.

Of days gone by a Pergola.

Walk Leader determined to give us a local history lesson. Ice house?

Huge tree STILL THERE! from 1987 (hurricane ) The great storm of 1987 was a violent extratropical cyclone that occurred on the night of 15–16 October, with hurricane-force winds causing casualties in England, France, and the Channel Islands as a severe depression in the Bay of Biscay moved north east.

We all love a viaduct. (Dont we?) I think Hampstead Heath always looks beautiful no matter what the weather.

Pergoda? Beautiful floor and view.

January, we love you, thanks for teaching us how to survive and appreciate the rest.

Until Next time Keep on Keeping on.
